Skin-Identical Lipid & Amino Acid Architecture

Modern skincare often tries to overpower the skin.

At Atlantik, we do the opposite.

We work biomimetically - meaning we design formulations that replicate the structure and processes of healthy skin, allowing it to function at its highest potential.

Biomimetic science is not about forcing change. It is about restoring balance.

Skin is an extraordinarily complex biological structure. Its outer barrier is composed of precise lipid ratios, structural proteins, amino acids, enzymes, and signalling molecules. To truly support it, you must understand its architecture.

Using natural ingredients alone is a strong starting point - because the chemical structure of plant and marine lipids is often remarkably close to that of human skin lipids. In some cases, they are almost identical. But closeness is not enough.

To give skin exactly what it needs, formulations must be engineered with extreme precision. This required us to elevate natural skincare by an order of magnitude beyond what existed on the market.

The skin barrier contains:

  • Nine distinct ceramides
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Cholesterol
  • A highly specific amino acid profile
  • Filaggrin-derived Natural Moisturising Factors (NMF)
To support skin properly, we had to replicate each layer. Enter Atlantik’s Biomimetic Complexes™.

Doctor Maher’s Ceramide Enriched Trinity FC Complex™

[Avena sativa, Lithospermum arvense, Ribes nigrum, Schizochytrium sp. (40% DHA Omega-3) Oils]

The skin barrier contains nine key ceramides, arranged in precise ratios alongside fatty acids and cholesterol. When these lipids decline, the barrier weakens, water escapes, and irritants penetrate more easily.

Our Ceramide Enriched Trinity FC Complex™ was designed to rebuild this lipid matrix.

  • Avena sativa (Oat Oil) is naturally rich in ceramide-like lipids and supports delivery of multiple ceramide subclasses.
  • Together with complementary plant lipids in the formulation, the complex delivers seven skin-identical ceramides directly, along with precursors that support the skin in generating the remaining two.
  • Ribes nigrum (Blackcurrant Seed Oil) provides gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a crucial omega-6 fatty acid associated with barrier resilience.
  • Lithospermum arvense contributes additional supportive lipids and antioxidant compounds.

The Power of DHA

At the centre of this complex is Schizochytrium sp. microalgae oil, providing 40% DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid).

DHA is often described as the “holy grail” of omega-3 fatty acids. While ALA and EPA are widely used, they must be converted into DHA to exert their most powerful biological effects. That conversion is inefficient in the body - and human skin has extremely limited delta-6 desaturase activity required for effective DHA synthesis.

In other words, the skin cannot reliably make its own DHA.

DHA is associated with over 70 biological functions within the body and plays a critical role in cellular membrane structure, lipid organisation, and inflammatory balance. Yet DHA is rarely used in skincare due to its extreme instability and oxidation sensitivity.

Through our proprietary systems, we stabilise and deliver DHA in a way that allows it to support:

  • Barrier lipid organisation
  • Membrane fluidity
  • Long-term resilience
  • Hydration retention
This is biomimetic lipid architecture at its highest level.

NMF FC Complex™

[Sodium Pyroglutamic Acid, Serine, Glycine, Arginine HCL, Histidine HCL, Glutamine HCL, Alanine, Threonine, Leucine, Valine, Carnosine Peptide, Citrulline, Lysine HCL, Proline, Creatine Monohydrate, Isoleucine, Aspartate, Glutamic Acid, Phenylalanine]

The outermost layer of skin relies on Natural Moisturising Factors (NMF) - a precise mixture of amino acids and their derivatives produced from the breakdown of a structural protein called filaggrin.

Filaggrin plays a central role in barrier formation. Certain individuals, particularly those prone to eczema, may have genetic variations affecting filaggrin production. Reduced filaggrin levels are strongly associated with barrier weakness, increased transepidermal water loss, and heightened sensitivity.

Healthy skin contains a specific amino acid profile derived from filaggrin metabolism. Our NMF FC Complex™ was engineered to replicate this amino acid architecture as closely as possible using naturally derived components.

By delivering a biomimetic amino acid profile, this complex supports:

  • Water-binding capacity
  • Surface hydration
  • Barrier flexibility
  • The biochemical environment required for optimal filaggrin function
This level of amino acid precision is rare in natural skincare. Most products rely on simple humectants. Atlantik replicates the skin’s own molecular blueprint.

Phyto-Nutritive FC Complex™

[Extracts of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), Korean Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) Root, Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Flower, Fucus vesiculosus, Himanthalia elongata & Oryza sativa]

The Phyto-Nutritive FC Complex™ bridges plant and marine biology through biomimetic synergy.

From a structural perspective, this complex supports:

  • Lipid reinforcement
  • Antioxidant defence
  • Barrier stability
  • Cellular resilience

The marine extracts contribute polysaccharides and fucoidans aligned with hydration and barrier support, while plant extracts deliver complementary antioxidant and conditioning properties. Together, they reinforce the lipid matrix and protect the skin’s architecture from environmental stress.

Biomimetics is not about copying one molecule. It is about recreating an ecosystem.

Dermal Soothing FC Complex™

[Vegetable Glycerine, Beta vulgaris & Betula alba Extracts]

Barrier repair alone is not enough. Skin under stress requires calming support.

The Dermal Soothing FC Complex™ provides biomimetic hydration and soothing functionality through:

  • Vegetable Glycerine - a humectant naturally present in skin physiology
  • Beta Vulgaris (Beet Extract) - supports hydration retention
  • Betula Alba (Birch Extract) - known for its calming and microbiome-supportive properties
This complex works synergistically with the lipid and amino acid systems to ensure that rebuilding the barrier does not trigger further irritation.

The Biomimetic Standard

True skin optimisation requires:

  • Replicating ceramides
  • Supporting essential fatty acids
  • Delivering cholesterol-supportive lipids
  • Recreating the amino acid matrix
  • Protecting structural proteins
  • Preserving hydration
Biomimetics is the science of giving skin what it recognises — in the ratios and structures it understands. Using only natural ingredients to achieve this required advanced biochemistry and deep structural knowledge.
But it is possible. And Atlantik has done it.
